Pyotr Shvetsov, an artist from St. Petersburg who graduated from the Leningrad Academy Art School and completed his studies in Europe, has already earned the reputation in his homeland as an anarchist and provocateur. He orients himself loosely in the existing artistic context and strives to keep the “window to Europe” open, bringing a fresh wind into the St. Petersburg artistic scene. His contribution to Russian art, however, is not limited to the importation of the newest artistic technology. Most of his exhibitions contain a subtle reflection on the Russian visual tradition and its art forms. His installation “Airplane” is a type of memorial to the aviation of the past. The Exhibition “The Living and the Dead,” deals with the zoomorphism of the Russian mythology and literature. In the exhibition “Fence,” one of the main Russian sources for unofficial communication and visibility is staged— with inscriptions and drawings. In the exhibition project “Head of the Architect,” the artist introduces his long-term work: historically stylized painted portraits of Russian architects of every time period build the ideal “portrait of the creator.”
Shvetsov returns again and again to the theme of the living and the dead, among others in the form of “still lifes.” Quotation marks are used, because the subjects of his paintings come into being as a permutation of the art form that demonstrates different levels of recognition, materiality, and representation of “nature morte,” or “dead nature.”
The works of Pytor Shvetsov can be found in the Russian State Museum, the Russian National Library, the British Library in London, the State Library in Berlin, the Public Library of New York, the Institute for Russian Culture in Los Angeles and in other public and private collections.
